Kerala Backwaters Cruise
Houseboats, palm-lined canals and the slowest pace in India.

A Kerala backwaters cruise is India at its gentlest: a houseboat drifting along palm-fringed canals, past rice paddies below the water level, village churches and temples, and families going about their day on the banks. The backwaters are a chain of lagoons, lakes and channels behind Kerala’s Arabian Sea coast, with Vembanad Lake at their heart.
Houseboats: Converted Rice Barges
The classic boat is the kettuvallam, a long wooden barge once used to carry rice and spices, now fitted with one to several bedrooms, a deck lounge and a small kitchen. A crew of two or three steers, cooks Kerala meals of fish curry, rice and vegetables, and moors for the night beside a village. Boats range from simple to air-conditioned luxury; some are private, some shared.

Where and How to Go
Alappuzha (Alleppey)
The busiest houseboat base, with the widest choice of boats and routes.
Kumarakom
On the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, with resorts and a bird sanctuary.
Kochi
The gateway city, with its Chinese fishing nets and old Fort Kochi quarter.
Day trips
Shorter cruises, canoe rides into narrow canals, or a half-day from a resort.
Kerala Tourism’s backwaters guide lists routes and licensed operators. Choose a boat with a clear safety record and life jackets on board.
A Night on the Water
Houseboats usually board around midday. The afternoon is spent gliding across open lake and into narrower channels, with stops to watch toddy tappers climbing palms, women washing clothes at the water’s edge or a village church service drifting across the water. Lunch and dinner are cooked on board. By early evening the boat ties up, the generator hums or falls quiet, and the night sounds of frogs and insects take over. You are back at the jetty the next morning after breakfast.
What a Kerala backwaters cruise is not
It is not a cruise ship: there is no entertainment program, no dining choice beyond the crew’s cooking and, on simpler boats, limited air-conditioning. That is exactly why people love it — but if you need more structure, pair it with a hotel stay.
Combining the Backwaters With a Cruise

Ocean cruises that call at Kochi often sell backwater excursions, and the port guides on Asia Shore Excursions cover what to do ashore in Asian ports. If you are already flying to India for a Ganges or Brahmaputra cruise, a short flight south adds a completely different river experience. The best season is from about October to March, after the monsoon.
Kerala Backwaters Questions
How long should a Kerala backwaters cruise be?
One night on a houseboat is enough for most visitors; two nights lets you reach quieter canals. Day cruises suit travelers short on time or coming off an ocean ship at Kochi.
Where do Kerala houseboats start?
Most leave from Alappuzha (Alleppey) or Kumarakom, on or near Vembanad Lake, about one to two hours by road from Kochi.
Is there a bigger-ship option?
Pandaw lists a Kerala backwaters route, and some travelers combine the backwaters with a Ganges or Brahmaputra cruise for two very different river experiences.
