India river cruises take you into a side of the country that road trips miss: temple towns reached only by boat, river islands with centuries-old monasteries, tea country, rhino reserves and the bathing ghats of Varanasi. There are three kinds of water to choose from — the Ganges and Hooghly in the east, the Brahmaputra in the northeast and the backwaters of Kerala in the south — and they suit very different travelers.
This site is a planner for the whole country. It helps you choose the right river, the right ship and the right time of year, and shows how to fit a cruise into a wider India trip. For deep dives into single rivers, our live sister sites Ganges River Cruises and Brahmaputra River Cruise have the detail; Asia River Cruises compares India with the Mekong, the Irrawaddy and the Yangtze.
The Rivers at a Glance
| River | Where | Best for | Typical cruise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ganges and Hooghly | West Bengal, from Kolkata; some voyages reach Varanasi | History, temples, colonial towns, the sacred river | About 7 to 12 nights on small ships |
| Brahmaputra | Assam, around Guwahati, Kaziranga and Majuli | Wildlife, tea country, remoteness | About 7 to 10 nights on expedition-style ships |
| Kerala backwaters | Around Alappuzha, Kumarakom and Vembanad Lake | Slow, scenic relaxation | One to a few nights by houseboat or small boat |

Who Sails India’s Rivers
India’s cruise ships are small, typically carrying a few dozen guests, because the rivers are shallow and change with the seasons. Lines selling India river cruises for the 2026–27 season include Uniworld on the Ganges, APT, the Indian operator Antara with its Ganga Vilas, and Pandaw, which lists Ganges, Hooghly, Brahmaputra and Kerala routes. On the Brahmaputra, specialist expedition operators have sailed for years.
Comfort ranges from simple and characterful to genuinely luxurious; our India luxury river cruise page explains what the top end looks like.

Building the Whole Trip
Few travelers fly to India just for a river. Most combine a cruise with Delhi, Agra and the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, or Varanasi, and some add a luxury train or a wildlife lodge. Our India river cruise holidays page shows the usual ways the pieces fit together, from 10-day trips to three-week journeys.

The Brahmaputra
A huge, braided river through Assam with rhinos, river islands and tea gardens.

Ganges River Cruises →Timing, Visas and Safety
River cruising in India is a cool-season activity: roughly October to March on the Ganges and into April on the Brahmaputra, outside the monsoon and the fierce pre-monsoon heat. U.S. citizens need a visa, usually an e-Visa obtained online. The U.S. State Department rates India at Level 2, exercise increased caution, with some specific regions rated higher. All of this is set out on when to go.
