When India River Cruises Sail

India river cruises follow the monsoon. Ships sail in the cool, dry months after the rains, when rivers are full enough to navigate but calm enough to cruise, and stop for the hot, wet months in between.

These are general patterns; each line publishes its own dates.

Visas and Entry

U.S. citizens need a visa for India. Most travelers use the e-Visa, applied for online through the Government of India visa portal; allow plenty of time, and use only the official site, as many look-alike sites charge extra fees. Your passport should have blank pages and validity well beyond your trip. Ocean cruise passengers calling at Indian ports also need a visa; ask your line which type.

Safety and Health

  • Read the State Department India advisory. India is at Level 2 overall, with some regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, areas near the Pakistan border and Manipur, rated Do Not Travel.
  • See a travel clinic about vaccinations and any malaria precautions for Assam.
  • Drink bottled or ship-provided water and eat freshly cooked food ashore.
  • Buy insurance with medical evacuation cover; Cruise & Travel Insurance explains what to look for.

Money and Connectivity

India’s currency is the rupee. Cards are widely accepted in cities and on board, but carry some small notes for tips, temple donations and village markets. Mobile coverage is good near cities and patchy on remote stretches of the Brahmaputra; ships’ Wi-Fi depends on the signal ashore. Tipping practices differ by line, so check what is included before you sail.

Packing for an India River Cruise

Light, loose cotton clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples; a warm layer for misty mornings on deck in December and January; slip-on shoes for temple visits; sun hat, insect repellent and a small flashlight for evening landings. Most ships have laundry service, so you can pack lighter than you think.

Timing and Practical Questions

What month is best for India river cruises?

November to February is the most comfortable on the Ganges and Brahmaputra, with cool mornings and dry days. October and March are warmer but still in season.

Do river cruises in India run in the monsoon?

Generally not. The monsoon brings heavy rain and fast, high water from about June to September, and most ships pause.

Is India safe for a river cruise?

The U.S. State Department rates India Level 2, exercise increased caution, and advises against travel to certain regions. River cruises in West Bengal and Assam run with guides and planned shore visits; check the advisory for the states on your route.
